What Is Gore-Tex DualMesh?

Gore-Tex DualMesh is manufactured by Gore Medical, a division of W.L. Gore & Associates, and was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995.

  • Smooth side → designed to prevent adhesion to internal organs

  • Textured side → intended to fuse with the abdominal wall for added support

The device is made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), more commonly known as Gore-Tex (or Teflon).

Why Is Gore-Tex Hernia Mesh Dangerous?

Although initially promising, the design and material have caused significant complications:

  • Shrinking of pores over time, leading to chronic nerve pain

  • Infections that antibiotics cannot treat due to bacterial embedding

  • Scar tissue pulling at the mesh, causing severe pain

  • Surgical removal required in many cases

Reported Complications

Patients implanted with Gore-Tex DualMesh have reported:

  • Bowel obstruction

  • Fistulas (abnormal organ connections)

  • Mesh migration

  • Mesh calcification → restricting movement and flexibility

⚠️ Despite these reports, the FDA has not issued a recall, and Gore-Tex DualMesh is still being used in surgeries.
