Roblox Video Game Addiction Lawsuit

The addictive video game Roblox was developed and published by Roblox Corp., headquartered in San Mateo, California. Roblox was initially released in 2006 and experienced much of its growth after 2015. Even though Roblox is a “free to play” video game, it generated $2.2 billion in revenue in 2022 alone. Roblox has over 217 million active monthly users and an astounding 66 million active daily users. Over half of Roblox’s users are under the age of 13 – that’s over 100 million Roblox users under the age of 13. Roblox’s statement mission is to have a billion users. To achieve that goal, Roblox is available on essentially all gaming consoles, computers, and mobile devices. Lawsuits allege that Roblox intentionally developed addictive gameplay loops and other tactics to keep kids addicted to and spending money on Roblox. Many families have spent a significant amount of out-of-pocket money to send their children to rehabilitation due to their severe Roblox addiction. Frequently, numerous stints in a video game rehabilitation center are needed before a child can overcome their Roblox addiction. The attorneys at Nigh Goldenberg Raso & Vaughn are now accepting cases for those who have become addicted to Roblox and have required rehab.

Roblox is “Free to Play”

Ever wonder why so many of the most popular video games are “free to play”? Because the goal is to get as many people as possible to try the highly addictive video game and subsequently spend even more money on microtransactions. It is Roblox’s goal to be as accessible to users as possible. Roblox attempts to get children hooked on it at school, advertising itself as an educational tool for children – “Roblox provides a fun, supportive, and education space where your child’s imagination can thrive.” Roblox Corp even encourages its use in schools – “A New Era of Teaching and Learning: Our team is dedicated to helping educators harness the power of Roblox to create immersive learning experiences that inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.” However, Roblox was built with numerous addictive properties that negatively impact childrens’ livelihoods, including their ability to learn and engage in critical thinking activities.

Roblox is Addictive

Roblox Corp designed the video game Roblox with not just software engineers and game developers, but also psychologists, in order to make the game more addictive. Roblox is a social game, allowing Roblox users to interact with friends and others within the game. The social nature of Roblox is intended to pressure Roblox users into spending more money to keep up with or outplay their friends.

In-Game Currency – Robux

Roblox makes its money by selling in-game virtual currency known as Robux. Sales of Robux increased by over 100% from 2019 to 2020 and by over 100% again from 2020 to 2021. Roblox now sells over $2 billion of Robux every year. Roblox intentionally makes in-game spending as easy as possible, resulting in minors spending large sums of money inside of Roblox on their parents credit cards.

Roblox Video Game Addiction Lawsuit

Roblox addiction lawsuits allege that Roblox Corp. knew that its game was addictive but concealed the true psychology behind the design of Roblox.
