Federal Multidistrict Litigation Overview
Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) is a specialized federal legal procedure used to coordinate complex cases—such as large-scale air crashes, data security breaches, and defective medical device claims—that share common questions of fact. By centralizing these cases into a single district, the federal court system eliminates duplicative discovery, prevents inconsistent pretrial rulings, and conserves judicial resources.
As of the latest federal statistics, there are 160 active MDLs currently pending in the United States. This index serves as a public resource for tracking the latest Transfer Orders and Status Reports issued by the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML).
